Early Settlements and Royal Hunting Grounds
Hunting was a traditionally popular – and practical – pastime of the nobility and Deeside was then, as now, well-stocked with deer and other game. In the tenth century Kenneth II visited on a hunting expedition, as did Malcolm Canmore in around 1060. According to tradition it was he who held a great gathering, where men met to test their strength and skill. It was the forerunner of the present Braemar Gathering.
The settlement lay close to what is now Braemar Castle, a short way to the east of the village itself; and although nothing remains of it, the site of the chapel which Macfergu constructed (dedicated to St Andrew) is thought to have been in what is now the main burial ground. It, and the buildings which succeeded it, is thought to have continued as the focus of worship until the early part of the nineteenth century.
Braemar is located on Royal Deeside,Jordan 23 Classic Shoes, the river valley which runs among mountains and forests from the Cairngorms to the sea. Queen Victoria’s visit in 1848 sparked an enthusiasm for all things Scottish: she and Prince Albert bought and extended Balmoral Castle some nine miles east of Braemar: the British royal family still own Balmoral today.
Perhaps the earliest recorded settlers in Braemar, which would then have been wilderness, were probably the Picts, who came some time during the 8th century and settled at the confluence of the rivers Dee and Clunie. The Pictish king Angus MacFergus ordered the building of a wooden fort which controlled a ford across the Dee.

Malcolm is credited with building the first bridge and possibly also the castle at Kindrochit, which passed eventually to the earls of Mar. The remains of a later stone version of Kindrochit castle are still visible, though they form a less than impressive heap of rubble dating from the fourteenth century. The Earls of Mar built a replacement in 1628, on the site of the present castle.
The Earl was not a competent leader, however: the rebellion failed and he lost his estates, despite attempts at reconciliation with the Hanoverians. (He died in exile,Jordan Retro 6, mistrusted by both sides.) Braemar Castle was burned by the government troops and later used as a garrison post on the new military road. It later passed to the Farquharsons of Invercauld, who still own it. It is open the public.
Braemar today is very much a holiday resort – a Highland village on the main road between Aberdeen and Perth. Busy for most of the year, it’s thronged with summer and winter visitors there to walk, ski, cycle or just enjoy the scenery, and it’s a popular stopping place for coach parties. But its predominantly Victorian architecture masks a long and often violent history.
In 1848 Victoria visited the Braemar Gathering, establishing a tradition of royal patronage which continues today (and is lucrative, as accommodation costs in Braemar go up on the weekend of the gathering). Like the rest of Deeside, Braemar benefited from the royal presence, becoming extremely popular (Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island while staying
Although the 7th Earl of Mar had successfully held Braemar Castle for the government in 1689,Air Jordan 2009, he became a convert to the Jacobite cause and it was he who, under the cover of a great hunt to be held in the area, led the muster of anti-government troops and raised the standard to begin the rebellion of 1715 (the site is now occupied by the Invercauld Arms Hotel).
