U.S. consumer credit fell at an annual rate of 3.3 billion dollars, or 1.75 percent in August,Tiffany, the Federal Reserve reported Thursday.
The August drop marked the 18th drop in the past 19 months, a further evidence of the weak consumers' confidence in the United States.
Borrowing increased modestly for one-time loans such as auto loans. That gain was offset by a steep drop in the category that includes credit cards.
Economists held that the possibility of a strong rebound of consumer borrowing in the United States is slim in recent months, against the backdrop of a wrenching recession and high unemployment.
The fact that U.S. consumers are borrowing less is a drag on the revival of the world's largest economy,Tiffany, as consumer spending accounts for about two thirds of its total economic activity.
