He hooked up with Joseph “Fatso” Negri, and they formed a gang of professional robbers, coached by old-time bandit Eddie Bentz. Hoping to avoid detection, Baby Face burned off the tips of his fingers with strong acid. This did nothing to improve his explosive bouts of rage, which other hoods endured because of his street smarts, native intelligence, and excellent underworld connections. His reputation was that
Baby Face became obsessed with guns and cars. He chose vehicles with 8-cylinder engines so that he could easily outrun the law. His love for the Thompson submachine gun was legendary; he savored the destructive power of its 800 rounds-per-minute of .45-caliber bullets. Other gangsters remarked that he was like a kid with a new toy when he acquired fresh weaponry. He paid a gunsmith to modify his semi-automatics to full capacity, and favored extended magazines to ensure maximum firepower. Some of his pistols were altered so that they acted as mini machine guns, firing 18 or 22 bullets in five seconds flat. These innovations made it easy to both outrun and outgun the police.
Before there was Monster Scott Kody, before John Gotti or even the Notorious there was Baby Face Nelson, the most despised and deadly gangster spawned by the Great Depression. Baby Face Nelson sprayed crowds of women and children with machine gun fire while laughing maniacally - just the sort of standup psycho who would always rather bleed out than cop out.
On parole, he obtained a series of jobs as a mechanic, car salesman, stove assembler, and truck driver; but his real career involved bootlegging for the Mob and hijacking rival gang’s illicit booze shipments. Baby Face developed a wide range of underworld contacts, which he used to good advantage. However, he preferred being his own boss to playing underling to more powerful crime figures.

He drifted from public to parochial school and back again, playing truant and running with older boys who specialized in theft and vandalism. After accidentally shooting another child while trying to scare him, Baby Face entered reform school for the first time. It wouldn’t be the last: He was incarcerated three times before he turned eighteen.
Lester Joseph Gillis, known to posterity as Baby Face Nelson, was born to Belgian immigrants on December 6, 1908. His father was a good provider, but also an alcoholic who committed suicide when Baby Face was sixteen; his mother always stood by her hooligan son [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], insisting that he never committed half the crimes of which he was accused.
With a few trusted associates, he pulled a series of lucrative jewel heists in Chicago’s upscale districts, and committed his first bank robberies in Itasca and Hillside. Older gangsters, envious of his rapid advancement [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], disparagingly nicknamed him “Baby Face.” When a robbery witness confirmed that he had “kind of a baby face,” the name made it into the press and stuck with him permanently.
In 1928, he wed Helen Warwick (originally Wawrzyniak), with whom he fathered a son and a daughter; and began to use the alias “George Nelson.”
