In 1592, Bess secretly married Sir Walter Raleigh. When Raleigh was beheaded on 29 October 1618, Bess couldn’t bear to be parted from her sweetheart and allegedly stole Raleigh’s head from the cutting block. Legend suggests that Bess carried the head with her in a leather bag [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and when Bess died the head was buried with her in the Carew tomb in St Mary’s Church, a stone’s throw away from Carew Manor.
Through the years of 1866 until 1939 the house was rebuilt and became the Royal Female Orphanage Asylum. Today Carew Manor is a modern school, specialising in teaching disabled and special needs children. The Great Tudor Hall still stands today as a silent reminder of its fascinating past, and is well worth a visit.

Origins
The Manor of Beddington, as it was originally known as, was purchased in 1344 by Sir Richard and Elizabeth de Wylughby. By the mid 14th century [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Carew family had moved into the area. Richard Carew served as a Royal Official in British-owned Calais. His son Nicholas was a young favourite of Henry VIII. His son’s rising fortune prompted Richard to remodel and create the great hammer beam roof in the Great Hall, which can still be seen today.

Becoming a School
By 1709, the Carew estate had become old-fashioned and run-down. Another Nicholas Carew decided to add two extra wings to the Great Tudor Hall, but a fire shortly after completion destroyed the whole interior. Carew Manor lay in ruins until it was eventually sold in 1859.
The grounds of Beddington Park echo hunting visits of Henry VIII, and walks made by Elizabeth I. Some locals swear they have seen ghosts of a headless Sir Walter Raleigh, searching for his head. The sweeping landscape of the park still conjures up images of a forgotten time, and it doesn’t take a vivid imagination to transport you back in time.
It is also believed that Sir Walter Raleigh was secretly reburied in St Mary’s, although there is no written proof for this.
Nicholas Carew’s relationship with Henry VIII led him to the position of keeper of the privy seal [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he built up a vast wealth and large estate in Beddington. Nicholas Carew married the de Wylughby’s daughter and their subsequent generations dominated the area for centuries.
Carew manor has always been noted for its links with important royals. Sir Frances Carew impressed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I when he presented her with an out-of-season cherry tree. The sister of Sir Frances Carew had a child, Bess, with Nicholas Throckmorton.
The imposing Carew Manor, which stands in the grounds of Beddington Park in Surrey, is a building steeped in great Tudor history. Although it is now a specialist school, in its past it has been the playground of royalty, with the likes of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and James I all numbered among the list of past visitors.
