Frege's Metaphysical Approach to the Meaning of Names
When people ask about the meaning of a person's name, they are usually looking for the etymology of the word itself. Like many English words it is a historical mish-mash of French and Germanic roots. It is apparently a combination of two words which, at the time, carried a meaning in the language. Unfortunately, you can't say "this is Jeff" and communicate "this is God's peace". These days no one thinks of that when they hear it.
Bertrand Russell greatly admired Frege's work but thought his puzzle could be explained without positing senses. Russell proposed that the meaning of a name is the same as a definite description of the person referred to. In English definite descriptions have the form "the so-and-so". A name means any definite description which describes only that person. So the meaning of "Barack Obama" could be "the first black president of the United States" but not "the president who smoked cigarettes" since other presidents also smoked.
