Nichiren Buddhism is based on the Lotus Sutra and the teachings of its founder Nichiren Daishonin (1222-1282). The word [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]"Daishonin" means “great holy man.”
Nichiren was born in 1222 in Japan during a period when the country was undergoing a great deal of turmoil. Although Buddhism was prevalent even then, Nichiren was not sure that it was being practiced correctly.
Nichiren Buddhists practice the teachings of Nichiren, as derived from The Lotus Sutra. Here is an introduction the life and teachings of Nichiren Daishonin and how one determined Buddhist brought about a change in Buddhism in Japan and across the world.
The government viewed Nichiren’s criticism of the established Buddhist schools and practices in Japan harshly. The Daishonin was exiled and subjected to violent persecutions by the authorities.

In 1260, post a spate of devastating natural disasters, Nichiren submitted his treatise or tract [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], titled On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of the Land to the highest authority in the government, urging them to take action and adopt Nichiren’s teachings to overcome the turmoil and strife.
After an intensive study of the different Buddhist Sutras, Nichiren reached the conclusion that the, “Lotus Sutra contained the essence of the Buddha’s enlightenment and that it held the key to transforming people’s suffering and enabling society to flourish.” (SGI-USA website) The Lotus Sutra was preached by the Buddha towards the end of his lifetime and emphasizes the innate dignity and equality of all.
On 28th April, 1253, Nichiren declared that the correct Buddhist practice is to chant “Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo” in order to reveal one’s inherent Buddha nature, and to develop the courage and wisdom needed to overcome challenges and experience lasting happiness.
Early Life of Nichiren Daishonin: Discovering a Solution to Suffering
Nichiren was nearly executed but was saved at the last moment by a meteor falling from the sky. Thereafter, he was banished to Sado island and made to live in extremely harsh conditions. However, Nichiren continued to encourage his followers through his letters, talks and writings.
According to Nichiren, if the right form of Buddhism was practiced, Japan wouldn’t be subject to great suffering. He was determined to find a solution to this suffering and devoted himself wholeheartedly to the study of the Buddhist scriptures and teachings.
Writings of the Daishonin, Kosen-Rufu, Shakbuku and Soka Gakkai
According to the Lotus Sutra [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “…Buddhahood — a condition of absolute happiness, freedom from fear and from all illusions — is inherent in all life.” (SGI website) Nichiren, after studying the Sutra in great detail, wrote down its teachings into a concrete, easy-to-understand form and spread it amongst his followers.
According to Nichiren, the secret to the happiness of all people lay in chanting the title of the Lotus Sutra, “Myoho-renge-kyo”. He added the word, “Nam” before it to signify “I”. This is also known as daimoku.
Later Years of the Daishonin’s Life: Persecution and Struggle
Throughout his lifetime, Nichiren interacted with his followers and disciples through letters and lectures. These letters and transcripts are compiled into The Gosho or Writings of Nichiren Daishonin and form the basis of study fo
