How Christmas Started
The other Roman festival that took place at this time was called the Saturnalia, based on the day the former agriculture god Saturn was worshipped. The Saturnalia took place on December 17 and after the Roman empire adopted Christianity the event was moved to the New Year.
In the early years of Christianity, Easter was always by far the most important event of the year and there was no attempt, as far as extant sources go, to celebrate Christ’s birth at all, let alone on a specific date.
Reasons for December 25
There is no specific birth date mentioned in the Gospels puma ferrari, Jesus is not quoted as saying anything about celebrating his birth and none of the writers whose work found its way into the New Testament mention a date.
Elsewhere in the pagan world, and much earlier, the ancient Greeks had organised religious festivals during the year celebrating the sufferings of the vine god Dionysus, whose blood, they said, was shed for the service of men. As part of the celebrations the birth of the Divine Child and the
There is even speculation that the nativity stories at the beginning of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew are more imagination than historical fact because they appear contradictory, cannot easily be fitted into the historical context and in the case of Luke may have been added later.
But as the religion developed, and particularly as it developed under the Roman Empire, theologians and churchmen began to fill in the gaps in their knowledge of Christ and the early church and to attach festivals to the Church year marking every element of Christ’s life.
The first reference to a date for Christ’s birth comes around 200 years after the event, although it took place in May or April. A Roman calendar from the mid-fourth century marks the first time that December 25 is set as the birthday of Jesus, but it then becomes apparent that two dates were in play; December 25 in the Western Roman Empire and January 6 in the Eastern. The period in between became known as the 12 days of Christmas and the dominant Western church made January 6 the feast of Epiphany, the day the wise men arrived.
There are different theories as to how Christmas moved to December 25. Pagan religions that pre-dated Christianity celebrated at about the same time when they marked the beginning of the return of the sun from the winter solstice. In the northern hemisphere daylight decreases until December 21 but begins to increase immediately after that, at first by only a few seconds but in a world with little or no artificial light it had possibly returned enough to be noticed by December 25.
The Roman emperor Aurelian began celebrating the birth of a deity called Sol Invictus, which means the unconquered sun, on that day and it is claimed the Christian festival was either an additional event or took over the old pagan date. The description of Christ as the new sun did not emerge until much later, however, and no Christian writer before the Roman Empire converted to the religion under Constantine talks of a takeover of a pagan festival or of pagan influences. Recent studies have shown that many of the pagan elements of Christmas – like the holly, ivy and the Christmas tree traditions – came gradually and much later.
For a time it was believed that the Romans also celebrated the birth of the god Mithras puma drift cat, often associated with Sol Invictus and whose worship often conflicted with that of Christ in Christianity’s early years, on December 25. There was also a belief that Mithras was claimed to have been born of a virgin puma golf, just like Christ.
