The U.S. Postal Service Scouting Stamp
On 27 July, 2010, the U.S. Postal Service added another collectible postage stamp to its repertoire of commemorative stamps with their dedication of the first-class 44-cent Scouting stamp. The Scouting stamp, which celebrates 100 years of the U.S. Scouting movement, was dedicated at the National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.
The design of the Scouting stamp, which is the creation of Craig Frazier, seeks to capture the spirit and outdoor adventure of scouting by depicting a backpacking scout set against the silhouette of a scout surveying the countryside through a pair of binoculars.

Customers have 60 days to obtain the first-day-of-issue postmark by mail. They may purchase new stamps at their local Post Office, at The Postal Store website, or by calling 800-STAMP-24. While the release of the Scouting stamp coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts, the U.S. Postal Service is quick to point out that the purpose of the stamp is to celebrate much more than just the Boy Scouts. In USA Philatelic: Beyond the Perf, Issue 017, July 16, 2010, stamp development manager Terry McCaffrey states that “It‘s not only Boy Scouts, but it’s Girl Scouts, it‘s Camp Fire USA. It’s all the organizations that embody the ideals of scouting.”

The dedication ceremony included former Boy Scout and current overseer of the U.S. Postal Service's green initiatives Sam Pulcrano. Also in attendace were Robert Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, Terry Dunn, 2010 Jamboree chairman, Lt. Colonel John Haefner, U.S. Army Ft. A.P. Hill Garrison commander, and Eagle Scout Jeremy Biedny, who emceed the event.

Ordering Scouting Stamp First-Day Covers
The Stamp Fulfillment Services department of the USPS is offering first-day covers of the Scouting stamp postmarked with the official first-day-of-issue cancellation. The Scouting first-day cover can be found in the quarterly [i]USA Philateli
First-day-of-issue postmarks are a free service offered by the USPS. The U.S. Postal Service will apply the first-day-of-issue postmark and then return the envelopes through the mail. All orders must be postmarked by Sept. 27, 2010.
The 2010 Scouting stamp is not the first issue by the U.S. Postal Service that has honored scouting. There have been eight other scouting stamps released by the USPS since 1948.
