Fans know the show's premise well: diminutive ruminant Shaun has his mischievous fun with his buds Shirley and Timmy, gently teasing The Farmer and his loyal dog Bitzer [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and engaging in no-holds combat against The Bull [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 3 Naughty Pigs and assorted aliens.
And bless them for it: Shaun the Sheep was a spin-off of the beloved Wallace and Gromit franchise, and it shares that series' gentle wit and sense of fun. The latest collection of Shaun the Sheep episodes – subtitled One Giant Leap for Lambkind – is a charming and hilarious collection of stop-motion shorts. They're designed for the 4-to-7-year old set, but their parents will enjoy them as well..
Given that most children's entertainment is mainly designed to keep the little ones glued to the television set while Mom & Dad cut the grass and do the laundry, it's great to see a show designed for kids that doesn't leave adults wanting to hurl something at the screen. Case in point: Aardman Animation's wonderful Shaun the Sheep, which Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment have been bringing to North America in job lots.
Shaun the Sheep: One Giant Leap for Lambkind Great Fun for Kids and Parents
The only questionable element here is the occasional off-colour joke: the exposure of a certain terrifying portion of The Farmer's anatomy in 'Hiccups' or an unusual source of fuel for the alien's vehicle in 'The Visitor' – let's just say it's a common animal byproduct and leave it at that. However, it's nothing that school-age kids haven't giggled about already.
Unlike the majority of kids-oriented DVD's out there [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], parents can enjoy – not just endure – watching Shaun the Sheep with their kids. This latest collection shows that Aardman still brings its 'A' game to the show, which is why Shaun the Sheep: One Giant Leap for Lambkind gets a 4/5.
The 'Wack a Pig' game allows the viewer to hurl cabbages at the 3 Naughty Pigs, with a point for every pig you smack. The 'Sing Along With Shaun' is a karaoke version of the title tune, with subtitles and ye olde bouncing balloon to help the viewer warble along.
These 6 episodes are taken from the show's first season, which originally aired in 2008. The dialogue-free episodes – like Bill Plympton's Dog series, the characters in Shaun the Sheep communicate with grunts, facial expressions and gestures – are grounded in classic slapstick, but the characters are rarely deliberately mean to each other. Even the kiddie aliens who wreak havoc in 'Shaun Encounters' are spoiled brats who are merely having harmless fun.
