For a fun and unique party theme for a child's birthday this year, turtles are a great idea. A turtle theme is good for both boys and girls of any age, from toddler to elementary schooler.
These homemade turtle invitations (see bottom image) are unique and inexpensive to make. Fold a piece of construction paper in half and cut out the outline of a turtle, making sure that the top of the shell reaches the fold. On the top layer of paper, remove the turtle's head, legs, and tail. You will end up with a turtle whose shell flips up to reveal the party details and information.
Before the party, decorate paper plates with a repeating hexagonal pattern to look like turtle shells. Take the kids outside and use tent stakes to secure the "shells" in a very large circle in the yard. There should be one less shell than there are children at the party. The birthday boy or girl stands in the middle of the circle while each guest stands on a shell. When the child in the middle yells "Go!" everyone has to scramble to another shell before they are tagged by the birthday boy or girl. The first person tagged goes to the middle of the circle for the next round.

Mark a start and finish line, and divide the children into two teams for turtle races. Two at a time, children must crawl as fast as they can to the finish line with a shell (an inverted laundry basket) over their backs and heads.
