Dr. Robert Sallis, president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and Dr. Ronald Davis, president of the American Medical Association (AMA), are spearheading the Exercise is Medicine initiative. This joint initiative of the ACSM and the AMA wants to make the medical community and the general public aware of the value of exercise to health. They want physicians to begin prescribing regular exercise as readily as they prescribe drugs and other therapies. They also want the general public to begin taking this miracle medicine.

The Prescription
The rising cost of health care is a major expense for society. Drugs and other treatments are increasingly expensive. If physicians begin prescribing regular exercise and all their patients begin taking exercise as medicine, health care costs for society will decrease significantly.
Exercise improves mental health and brain function in both youths and older adults. Exercise induced improvements in brain function reduce the risk of dementia in older adults.
