Avatar Movie Shocks, Critics Like It
In an interview with USA Today, Academy Award winning director James Cameron stated there are plans to re-release Avatar (2009) in theaters this year, presumably with additional scenes.
A Special Edition of Aliens (1986) was released in 1992 on Laserdisc and VHS. The Special Edition cut of the film included 17 minutes of additional scenes. The scenes in question were reportedly cut from the Theatrical cut due to pacing.A Special Edition of The Abyss (1989) was released in 1993 on Laserdisc and in 2000 on DVD. The Special Edition of the film featured almost half and hour of deleted footage. The additional footage drastically changes the narrative of the film, adding new plot twists.A Special Edition of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) was released on Laserdisc, VHS and DVD. Additionally on DVD was an Extended Special Edition version of the film on the Ultimate Edition DVD as an Easter Egg. Sometimes the Special Edition of the film is advertised as a Director's Cut. The Special Edition restores 15 minutes of deleted footage, while the Extended Special Edition restores 17 minutes of deleted footage in comparison with the Theatrical Version of the film.Titanic 3-D

In the same USA Today article, Cameron also spoke of plans to re-release Titanic (1997) in 2012 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in a 3D format also with additional scenes, to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship.
In November 2010, 20th Century Fox are expected to release a Deluxe DVD and Blu-ray release of Avatar. The details of this release are yet to be confirmed.
As for the home video format Avatar will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in April in the US on Earth Day (April 22). However the Fox release will only include the Theatrical cut of the film, with no additional extra features.
Cameron is no stranger to the world of special editions and extended cuts of feature films.
The rationale to re-release Avatar and Titanic in cinemas, Cameron suggests is a result of the financially successful 3D release of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, as it seems audiences are now embracing the 3D cinematic experience.This year there are more then ten 3D feature film releases, including How to Train Your Dragon [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Shrek Forever After, Toy Story Trilogy, Tron Legacy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Clash of the Titans, Disney's Tangled, Despicable Me and a re-release of 1991's Beauty and the Beast.
