During the 1600s, the early Christians in England celebrated the Mother’s festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent – the forty-day period leading up to Easter -- in honor of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. In England, a religious order extended the celebration to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday. It was also known as Refreshment Sunday as the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed that day.

In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston pacifist and suffragist, organized a day called a “Mother’s Day for Peace” by encouraging mothers to rally for peace, motherhood and womanhood.
In 1907, Anna Jarvis, a daughter of Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, a Philadelphia school teacher set up a national Mother’s “Work Day” to raise awareness of poor health conditions. Jarvis asked the legislators and businessmen to create a special day for mothers.
