Eurovision Competition Rules
Alexander Rybak Wins Eurovision
Second place belonged to Iceland and Azerbaijan came in third, but it was clear early on that Norway was the undisputed winner. The United Kingdom, who entered a song performed by singer Jade Ewen and written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ranked fifth. Webber also joined Jade on stage on piano.
The winner is chosen by fan votes from member nations (countries are not allowed to vote for themselves) and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], new this year, by a national jury. The panel was instituted because of past year’s political affiliations influencing voting.
Rybak’s point total beat the previous record of 292 that Finnish group Lordi were awarded in their 2006 win. The win gives Norway three titles total, with their previous wins occurring in the 1985 and 1995 competitions. Ireland still holds the highest amount of wins with seven.
The competition is one of the biggest in Europe and can make stars overnight of performing talent and the smaller countries involved. According to Reuters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], winner Rybak told reporters that "now Norway is really on the map."

A Worldwide Phenomenon
Outrage stemmed from the arrests, especially because the Eurovision contest is extremely popular with the European gay and lesbian community.
Eurovision is enormous in Europe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with estimates ranging from 100 million to 600 million viewers in previous years. Past winners have included such noted acts as ABBA and Celine Dion.
The day of the final contest, Russian police arrested dozens of people who were gathering to march in a gay rights parade. A prominent gay rights activist named Nikolai Alexeyev was among those arrested and police barricaded a park where the marchers were planning on meeting.
23-year-old Rybak beat the 24 other competitors in the 54th Eurovision contest handily. The son of musically inclined parents, he was born in the Soviet Union, but emigrated to Norway at a young age. Rybak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a noted songwriter, wrote the winning song “Fairytale” himself and impressed with his violin work and lead vocals. He was considered a fan favorite throughout the competition.
The country of Norway won the Eurovision 2009 competition on May 16th with the song “Fairytale,” performed by Alexander Rybak. The singer/songwriter, who is immensely popular in Norway, won with a record-breaking 387 votes.
Gay Pride Controversy
The competition was started in 1956 after wars devastated Europe and public morale. Participants include member countries of the European Broadcasting Union with over 40 countries competing. Each country enters one song into the competition to be sung live.
