Subconsciously Fineman see’s Johnson as his only real friend but cannot admit it without admitting more than he wants to about how much pain he is in mentally.
Actor, writer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Director Mike Binder (The Upside of Anger – 2005, Man About Town – 2006,) uses the audiences expectations of Sandler and plays on that by adding soft touches of subtle comedy within the dialogue but not so much that the moody undertone is totally overshadowed. What is created is a raw sense of hidden magnetism that keeps the viewer asking: What is exactly wrong with this character?

Cheadle and Sandler Work Well Together
Reign Over Me doesn’t give anything away in regards to its plot or where the movie plans on taking the audience. For much of the first portion of the film, trying to figure out why Adam Sandler (The Longest Yard – 2005,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], You Don’t Mess with the Zohan – 2008) isn’t playing the comedian presents a minor distraction. Adam Sandler (Charlie Fineman) is a man who has become an emotional recluse after his life is shattered as a result of the 9/11 disaster. But this isn’t apparent until much later but by then, two lives, almost in polar opposition have collided with interesting results.

Don Cheadle (Crash – 2004, Brooklyn’s Finest – 2009) is as usual in excellent form as Alan Johnson, the talented dentist whose life is mulling along devoid of spontaneity, until he meets his old college roommate Charlie Fineman (Sandler) and things begin to unexpectedly unravel. Sucked into Fineman’s world of oddity and surrealism, Johnson starts trying to make sense of why his friend barely remembers him. Fineman’s reluctance to forming social connections leads Johnson to procure psychiatric help for him.
Is Reign Over Me a Serious Movie?
Sandler’s performance only really stands out within the last thirty or so minutes of Reign Over Me which isn’t a bad trade off at all. Almost without warning the audience is hit with the answers to the mystery surrounding this character and his erratic hermit-like behaviour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], regardless of the clues embedded in the narrative that could be accidentally overlooked.
This movie is worth taking a look at if it was missed the first time around. Its pace and effortless crawl towards conveying the ultimate plot are peppered with warm smile-out-loud moments contrasted with tragedy, that make the heart-wrenching scenes bearable.

Sandler may be at his Best yet
The real essence of the story and why Fineman has enclosed himself in a protective shell isn’t divulged until well into the narrative. The soundtrack that plays along in between and at the end of certain scenes is light and at times optimistic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], giving the sense that what is unfolding on screen is light in nature too. But, Sandler’s interpretation of a lost soul is passable although not terribly convincing, yet it works on some level in juxtaposition with his co star.
