Citing Kinski and Herzog may be unfair, seeing as A) they hated each other,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and B) Kinski is now dead. However, Herzog obviously knows a good thing when he works with one, so why doesn't he call up his recent collaborating partner, Nicolas Cage? The two made an extraordinary film in last year's Bad Lieutenant remake, so why not give Nic a call? God knows he could use the cash.
One-Trick Ponies
Herzog, Kinski, and Cage
Where, oh where, have the classic collaborations gone? Once upon a cinematic time there were actor/director partnerships that could be consistently relied upon. Alfred Hitchcock and James Stewart, Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski, even De Niro and Scorsese have seemingly gone into hiding; Scorsese preferring to work with Leonardo DiCaprio. While many may argue that these share a great partnership, one question must be posed: Have they yet made a masterpiece? De Niro and Scorsese have accumulated a list almost as long as DiCaprio's entire filmography: Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, Raging Bull and Goodfellas to name but a few. Yet, where are they now? Rumours abound that De Niro has been cast in Scorcese's upcoming gangster flick I Heard You Paint Houses, but ol' Marty has so much on his plate, it seems like that prospect could be an eternity away.
Of course, there are other collaborators working today who arguably also fall short of the greatness that classic Hollywood collaborations achieved. This is in reference to perhaps one of the best known director/actor teams in modern cinema: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. While there are many fans of this duo's cinematic output, there is also a sense of repetition surrounding their work. De Niro and Scorsese, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], created films that were always varied and interesting. For every Mean Streets there’s a King of Comedy, or a Cape Fear. Burton and Depp's contributions are always the same thing: quirky protagonist with cavalier spirit prances around a series of gothic backdrops. Sometimes the protagonist is heroic (Edward Scissorhands) and other times villainous (Sweeney Todd), however, even the most loyal of Burton/Depp fans could not deny the sense of déjà vu that evades the screen whenever they collaborate. The same argument can be applied to Wes Anderson and his acting troupe: Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman et.al. While this group have made good films together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of their output is too similar in its tone and content to ever really match up with the great cinematic meetings. Anderson's films have yet to prove that their group are capable of the diversity of Bob and Marty. Even Anderson’s attempt at a children's film (Fantastic Mr Fox) did not seem particularly different to his live-action films. Of course, this is not a criticism of these collaborations. Burton and Depp have made very good films together, as have Anderson
This lamentation of a lack of brilliant collaborators in today's industry is highlighted further by those who occasionally strive for greatness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but are unable to reach it due to their own poor choices. This refers to the entire clan of Judd Apatow's regulars. Apatow's gang seemed to begin life as a group of underperforming slackers attempting to make raunchy comedy-dramas(Knocked Up) with just a group of their friends as regular collaborators. They now no longer resemble this same group of people. Instead, Apatow's name is branded on so many misfires (Drillbit Taylor) that he no longer seems to be pleased to make very funny comedies with his old college buddies, and is instead replaced by a man happy to attach his name to projects that should be beneath him and his collaborators. Perhaps quality control should be first on Apatow's agenda, as he has obvious ambition as a filmmaker, with his last film, Funny People, being an excellent dramedy, where he once again worked with his old friends to winning effect.
