By the end of 1940, Eastern Europe had a whole new map. With the Baltic states in the Soviet Union, fury from within the newly occupied countries began to spread. By the 1980s [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the countries organized protests in their own separate ways. For Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, they decided to organize peaceful protests.

Latvia and Lithuania also had singing protests of their own. Thus, this period of song protests between 1987 and 1990 became known as The Singing Revolution.
The spirit of protest and national independence continued. On August 20, 1991 Estonia declared its independence. The very next day, Latvia followed suit. On August 22, Iceland was the first country to recognize the independent Baltic states. On August 24, the USSR recognized Estonia's independence and by December 1991, the Soviet Union was no longer.

A New Eastern Europe Map and A New Baltic History
In 1989 tensions were running high in the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic people were angered over the stronghold that communism had on their countries. Since 1940 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all three nations had been under strict Soviet control due to the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. This agreement between Hitler and Stalin divided Europe into Nazi and Soviet territory. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were assigned to the Soviet Union. Thus began 50 years of Soviet occupation in the Baltic region.
The summer of 1987 signified the beginning of the protests in Estonia. In the capital of Tallinn, ten thousand Estonians per night gathered for the annual song festival called Laulupidu. They sang national and patriotic songs otherwise forbidden by the Soviet Union. By September 1988, Estonians had organized more seriously and 300,000 Estonians made a declaration of independence at a protest in the song festival grounds.
The Baltic Way was a major historical event that helped the Baltics declare their independence. Today, the three countries look fondly upon this day in history and in 2009 celebrated its remembrance. It was events such as these that caused the collapse of the Soviet Union and set the path to freedom for the former Soviet republics of Eastern Europe.
