Best British TV of 2009
The Funny Side ofV Talent on BBC Two
The Kevin Bishop Show
You know the score by now; this is a list of five TV shows from varying years and broadcasters with a clumsily written pithy description of each one all based around the vague notion of starting with the same letter. This one bring together the bizarre series The Prisoner, Peep Show’s quest to enter the annuls of great comedy, the chatty delights of Parkinson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a bloke delivering letters in Postman Pat and where the origin of Idol antichrist Simon Cowell.
A more clichéd synopsis would state that it’s the POV style that sets Peep Show apart from traditional sitcoms but that’s to ignore the witty, naturalistic dialogue and wonderfully comedic turns from a cast that includes David Mitchell, Robert Webb and Neil Fitzmaurice. Peep Show is simply about two blokes (Jeremy and Mark) living their lives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not really going anywhere due to embarrassing missteps and ending up back at their flat blanked out in front of the TV. That never
Bizarrely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite being one of the best comedies of the last 10 years ratings are unusually low and the show has faced cancellation only to be saved by the Family Guy rule of high DVD sales keeping it alive. It might be naive to suggest that Channel 4 continue to commission the series based on quality alone but they have decided to remove Big Brother from their line-up so maybe there is a touch sense at C4 headquarters.
Perhaps the best aspect in respects to the mythos of The Prisoner is that even all these years later nobody really knows what was going on and speculation is still rife amongst cult followers, adding to the mysterious element of the show. Lost fans have it easy.
Escaping from the mind of actor Patrick McGoohan, The Prisoner would stretch the boundaries of surrealism acceptable in a mainstream TV drama. The story centres on a spy known only as Number Six waking up on a mystifying island called The Village and his doesn’t matter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to explain the plot would take all day and even then it would make little sense. Regardless it was a ratings hit and an influential progression of allegorical storytelling.
