Should've been B-Sides: [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Your Own Worst Enemy
Despite what one thinks of Bruce's political bent, they'd have a hard time finding flaws with his gift of songwriting. He transitions easily from hard rock ("Radio Nowhere") to pop ("Living in the Future") to slower tempo, almost folk numbers (again, the title track). The majority of the record settles in to a mid-tempo pace. This works fine, and compared to many of Bruce's quieter albums (Nebraska and Devils and Dust come to mind), it does sound a lot bouncier.
Bruce and the E Street Band rarely fail to deliver [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they live up to the promise on their latest release. The album ends with a touching final track to Bruce's longtime friend Terry McGovern, and amidst the debate that's sure to ensue of the amount of politics hidden in the lyrics of this album, it's nice that Bruce ends on a personal note.
Lyrically, the most disappointing song is the leadoff track and first single, "Radio Nowhere." The music itself pulses and remains unrelenting to the finish line, but Bruce falls back on easy opportunities to add an anthemic quality to the song that is entirely unnecessary. Repetitions of "I just wanna hear some rhythm" pail in comparison to the build up of "Hiding on the backstreets" from the song "Backstreets," off Bruce's masterpiece album Born to Run.
While there will always be a few standout tracks on any work, the important thing about this Bruce album is the lack of duds. Excluding "Your Own Worst Enemy," every song on this album is well conceived and well executed (even "Your Own Worst Enemy" ends on the interesting lyric "Your flag it flew so high / It drifted into the sky").
Best Tracks: Long Walk Home, Living in the Future, Terry's Song
Bottom Line: 4 and a half out of 5 stars

Despite the fact that this may not be Springsteen's hardest album (Darkness on the Edge of Town), nor his catchiest (Born in the it is most definitely an E Street Band album. Nowhere is this more evident than on "Living in the Future," Magic's peppiest song [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a track that should be released as a single. Clarence Clemmons swirls in and out of songs as he always does, punctuating some of the albums best songs with saxophone solos. This works out perfectly on the aforementioned "Living in the Future." Also, the underrated combination of Danny Federici on organ and Roy Bittan can be heard adding flourishes to the background of the songs to make them that much fuller.
Bruce Springsteen's new album, Magic, is his first with the E Street Band since 2001's The Rising. Magic is lyrically a more diverse record (something not evident unless you take the time to sift through the Boss's tendency to mumble), and certainly a more puzzling one. While The Rising focused on a specific moment in American history (September 11th, namely), Magic jumps all over the place. At times, Bruce is blatantly political (such as on the track "Last to Die"), and at other times more subtle, but nonetheless acerbic (such as on the title track and "Long Walk Home," perhaps the album's best overall song). As always, Bruce works best balancing his cynicism with powerful, relatable middle-class themes.
