Images of rock climbing typically show a climber hanging [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rope in tow [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from the side of a vertical or overhanging cliff. For many, this image may seem like a precarious and possibly frightening way to spend your time, but with the proper training, experience and equipment, basic rock climbing in most locations can be safe, fun and immensely rewarding.

Belayer: "Climb Away!"
While there are many different types of climbing that require varying degrees of skill and experience, as a beginner, you won't be hanging from a cliff high in the air just yet. A safe and secure way to learn to climb is called Top Roping. This type of climbing is used in climbing gyms where the ropes hang securely from the ceiling or another location above the climb. When climbing, one end of the rope is tied to the climber and the other to the belayer. In this fashion, if the climber falls off the wall [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the belayer uses their belay device to stop the rope from moving and hold the climber in place as they hang from the rope.
Communication between the climber and belayer is very important as climbing is a dangerous sport that requires attention and ability to react quickly. At a climbing gym, you will learn basic commands that let the belayer know the climber is ready, and vice versa. An example below:
Getting Off the Ground in Climbing
Basic but essential gear to get started includes a harness, a belay device, a chalk bag and climbing shoes. Those new to climbing or looking to familiarize themselves with the components of the sport and the feeling of climbing could visit a climbing gym. Gyms offer a safer way to learn the ropes while still gaining important experience and knowledge. These indoor facilities cover their walls with differently sized holds arranged in routes that mimic actual rock climbing, and staff offer training on tying the rope and using the belay device, as well as other safety tips. These aspects of the sport are critical to ensure the safety of the climber once they are off the ground.
