The Avengers (May 2012)
The first big superhero movie of the year may just turn out to the biggest. Directed by Joss Whedon and with Iron Man director Jon Favreau producing,Jordan 9, The Avengers is the end-result of Marvel Entertainment's masterplan which it started to put in place in 2008 with the release of The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man.
Movies featuring comic book superheroes are among the biggest blockbusters in the history of cinema, starting with Superman in 1978 starring the late, great Christopher Reeve. Thirty years later, The Dark Knight shattered box office records and became one of only six movies that today have earned over $1 billion.

Marvel vs. DC: From Comics To Movies
The Avengers movie doesn't just feature one or two superheroes but a whole team of them. This includes Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man and Thor, as well as supporting characters such as Nick Fury and Black Widow, played by Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson in the recent Iron Man 2 movie. Both Edward Norton and Robert Downey Jr are set to reprise their roles as the Hulk and Iron Man, while Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth will play Captain America and Thor for a second time after their own movies are released next year.
Superman: Man of Steel (December 2012)
After Joel Schumacher's critically panned Batman and Robin movie seemed like it had killed the once mighty Batman movie franchise, director Christopher Nolan's 2005 Batman Begins was a complete surprise. A reboot that grounded Batman in today's world, the movie was dark, edgy and intelligent, making it seem almost possible that a character like him could actually exist.
The plot of The Avengers is still unknown, and Spider-Man 3 proved how too many characters and storylines don't always make a good movie, but it's difficult to imagine how Marvel's plan won't result in a smash hit.
Not Spider-Man 4 but a reboot of the franchise that Sam Raimi lead to global success with three movies earning almost $2.5 billion in total. Andrew Garfield takes over from Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Marc Webb takes the helm as director in a movie that will see Parker develop his Spider-Man abilities while at High School.
Batman 3 (July 2012)
The 2008 sequel, The Dark Knight, took Nolan's vision even further and earned a well-deserved average score of 94% on the Rotten Tomatoes Web site, with Heath Ledger's outstanding performance as the Joker winning a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Little is known about the third and final Batman movie from Christopher Nolan but as sequel to a movie that made over $1 billion worldwide, expectation is huge.
There's no official news yet on the plot of the new Spider-Man movie, or who the villain will be,Jordan 5, but it will be the first in the series to be released in 3D. The previous three movies have all been huge box office hits but it remains to be seen whether Spider-Man can fight his way to success again when released the same month as the next Batman movie.
