Transforming the Tub and Shower
In many cases the tub of a small bathroom is 5’ long, and frequently only 14” or 16” high. This is great for showering or bathing small children, but for an adult the tub may seem unusable.
When installing the showerhead, try using a multi-positional head, such as Grohe’s Freehander. These showerheads can be pushed up for a standard shower,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or pulled down to become body sprays, allowing the user to have a performance shower with no additional plumbing required.

Enlarging with Tile Design
Whether using a vanity on legs, or a floating vanity anchored to the wall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], consider using a shelf installed midway down for extra storage. This keeps the bathroom functional,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without sacrificing style.
To further enhance the effect, and make the tub more comfortable for climbing into and out of, instead of using sliding glass doors, consider using shower doors in a French or folding fashion. These doors will hinge on the walls, and can either fold back in panels, or simply open out. The effect is beautiful, and can help visually enlarge the room by showing off the shower tile.
Purchase the tub without an apron, or front and visually enlarge the bathroom by either bring the floor tile up the front of the bath, or by using the shower wall tile on the face of the tub as well.
Complement the floor by using the same material in a border in the shower. If using a mosaic floor, try using a 12” tile on the walls in a complimentary color. Use the mosaic as an accent on the shower walls, as well as a backsplash behind the sink.
If the floor is done in a large format tile, consider using glass mosaics for the shower surround, and the tub face. Each tile will catch the light individually, reflecting and enhancing the design.
To transform this utilitarian tub and shower into a spa bath, begin by replacing the bathtub. Soaking tubs and jetted tubs which are 20” to 22” in depth are also available in 5’ x 30” footprints. These tubs will fit perfectly into the space of a regular tub shower, but can accommodate most adults with a deep, massaging soak.
If a small bathroom cannot be enlarged try using some of these tricks to turn that small bathroom into a spa bathroom without changing the footprint or the plumbing.
To further enhance the spa bathroom effect,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], try installing river rocks on the bathroom floor, as well as on the face of the shower. These smooth stones will provide a massage for the feet, while they draw the eye out and up the room.
To finish off the spa bathroom look, and continue to visually enlarge the room, consider using an open or floating vanity with shelving below it. An open vanity is set on legs, with or without draws just below the sink. The eye can travel below and behind the vanity, opening up the space.
Use an Open Vanity
To visually enlarge the room, always use either large format or mosaic tiles on the floor of the bathroom. Both with fool the eye into thinking the floor, and therefore the room, are larger than they are.
Keep the colors of the bathroom cool to help keep the room feeling open, and stick to whites for the fixtures for a crisp, fresh look. Keep decorations to a minimum to help create a clean, spa feel, and try to r
Many homes have a 5’ x7’ or 6’ x 8’ bathroom included in their plans. While some of these bathrooms can be enlarged by taking space from closets or nearby rooms, many are restricted in their size by support walls, old plumbing or the expense of enlarging.
