When the hopeful instead find out from a specialist that their kids Megan and Patrick may not live past another year, John immerses himself in all available advanced theoretical research on the rare disorder, leading him to seek out a brilliant theoretical scientist named Robert Stonehill (Harrison Ford, of the Indiana Jones franchise) a smart but extremely stubborn man years ahead of others in his field, who may be close to a solution to stopping Pompe in its tracks, if not slowing it down drastically.
John Crowley (Brendan Fraser, Inkheart) is a successful executive at Bristol Myers, and he and wife Aileen (Keri Russell, Bedtime Stories) both try their best each night to cope with the fact that two of their three young children suffer from Pompe Disease, a condition which makes the breakdown of glucose buildup in muscles nearly impossible, leading to death at an early age.
As such, having very few options left to him [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Crowley takes a leap of faith and promises Stonehill half a million dollars in research funds (essentially using up their life savings) in order to get started on finding a cure, racing against the clock to get a working enzyme before (kids names here) die.
Extraordinary Measures Plot Summary
Harrison Ford plays angry and short tempered very well; his curmudgeonly roles in films like The Mosquito Coast, Six Days Seven Nights and a number of other action films requiring him to yell a lot, seem to have paid off here.
The main problem in John's path? There is no funding as of yet for this type of research, and all of Stonehill's work at this point is theoretical.
Many drama fans might be turned off by the overabundance of medical data thrown into the script making for a mostly dry storyline, at least when it's busy dealing with the science of it all. At least the end product gets elevated by the two leads, who emerge with some fascinating onscreen chemistry.
Extraordinary Measures is the first film to be produced by CBS Films, a new division of CBS focusing on the release of modestly budgeted films for mass distribution. Harrison Ford not only co-stars but also serves as executive producer on this film based on the real life story of John Crowley and his wife Aileen, and is based on author Geeta Anand's non-fiction book "The Cure."
Extraordinary Measures Overall Analysis
When not facing technical problems or each other's egos [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both men must make serious decisions about eventually reaching out to venture capitalists for more funds, knowing full well that this would help them finally produce a working cure, and potentially have a partner to mass market the result to similar families who have all but lost hope.
Can Crowley and Stonehill manage to successfully navigate corporate pressure and federally regulated roadblocks in time to save these kids or avoid killing each other from lack of patience? Can they also survive these experiences with their relationships intact? Extraordinary Measures tries to answer these questions while asking the audience to come along for the ride on an emotional (if not predicatble) roller coaster.
In order to raise this much capital, John quits his high profile job, in order to start his own biotech company [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which would serve as a startup platform for all of Stonehill's work.
