Disney's Upcoming Animated Films
Keith David in Princess and Frog
Anika Noni Rose Frog Princess
"Blasphemy!" screamed everyone who heard the decision, including Clement & Musker. "Randy Newman's not fit to lick Alan Menken's shoes! He's a pop/jazz guy! What does he know about scoring a big Disney flick?"
(Source: Disney watchers were incensed when creative head John Lasseter put Pixar go-to composer Randy Newman on the yet-to-be-greenlit animated movie The Frog Princess instead of Alan Menken. But a new rumour about the project starts to put Lasseter's decision in perspective.
"Not so fast, Cochise," said John Lasseter. "I want Randy Newman as composer instead." And since John's the boss [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Newman got the gig.
So John Lasseter actually knows what he's doing by bringing in Randy Newman? What a fraggin' concept [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
If that's the case (keep in mind, this is rumour only [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to be taken with a few grains of salt), the concept as Newman as composer starts to click. Newman is coming from a pop/jazz/Americana background: music fans will remember that he had minor hits with the 'quirky' songs "Short People" and "I Love in the 70's and 80's before becoming a respected movie scorer. He even grew up in New Orleans, so he knows that city and its rich musical heritage. That certainly gives him an edge over the more classically-trained Alan Menken.
P.S. - If The Frog Princess is set in New Orleans and they don't bring in either The Meters or The Neville Brothers to contribute to the score, there's gonna be some blood on the wall.
However, there's a little rumour going around now that Lasseter's giving The Frog Princess a more African-American slant, setting the movie in a "New Orleans-ish setting" and putting in several jazz songs.
Why the fuss? Quick recap (Since I had already talked about it here): The Frog Princess is being trumpeted as Disney's return to traditional cel animation after the Mouse House closed the program in 2005. Lasseter had even put Ron Clements and John Musker on the case as directors, the guys who spearheaded Disney's "animated revival" with 1989's The Little Mermaid. Alan Menken would've been a natural choice as composer, since his Oscar-winning score had helped make that flick a classic. Musker and Clements agreed as well; Menken was their first and only candidate.
