Applied theatre projects can be a rewarding part-time career to help sustain actors who are out of work, or looking for more professional development opportunities.
Planning applied theatre projects is often easier with the input of people in the specific community, so sharing these plans with staff members and getting feedback will help smooth out any kinks.
Once these considerations have been made the next step is finding a place interested in supporting these projects. It could be a youth or community centre, community development program, immigrant support service or something else within the local community.
The American Bureau of Labor Statistics’ ‘Occupational Outlook Handbook’ for 2010-11 sums up the situation aptly with this statement: “Actors endure long periods of unemployment, intense competition for roles, and frequent rejections in auditions.”
Community-based work is ideal for actors who like to teach or have a strong interest in working with people who have limited performance experience. People with a background in improvisation are at an advantage because theatre sports games can be a huge part of applied theatre programs, as can the “getting to know you” exercises often done at the start of acting or theatre-based workshops.

It’s no secret that actors often have to take on day jobs, or rely on savings to support themselves when work is scarce.
There are even theatre companies dedicated to this type of work, such as Canada’s Headlines Theatre and the UK’s Geese Theatre Company and Cardboard Citizens.
A good way to decide whether to undertake applied theatre work is to consider the training you have done and the teachers you have had. What did you learn [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and how were you taught? Would you like to be in the role of one of your past teachers or mentors?
Planning Action With the Community
If the answer to that last question is “yes”, then getting into applied theatre could be the creative answer to day job concerns. The next important consideration is whether someone will work better alone, or with someone else.
As well as being involved in personal development within the community, this ty
After an organisation shows enough interest in doing an applied theatre project, workshop planning can begin. A simple but effective way of planning is to identify a desired outcome over the course of the project [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and structure a session plan for each week that works towards this goal.
