As with many of Lynch’s films, Lost Highway is not for everyone. Although the film begins in a rather simplistic plot, one should not take it as that. Bill Pullman and Patricia Arquette play a married couple, who receive a videotape on their front door steps one morning. The tape contains footage of their house, recorded from the street. At first, they believe it is a joke, but when they receive several more videotapes of their house and themselves within the house, they decide to call the police. The police tell them that there is nothing they can do about it. The couple goes to a party to steam off and let loose and it is here that things change.
Up until this point, the film has been pretty straight forward in terms of plot and character development. It is known that Pullman plays Fred Madison, a saxophonist who earns his living playing jazz at local clubs. Arquette plays Renee Madison, Fred’s beloved wife. It is never revealed what Renee does for a living, but shortly after the party that the couple attends, Renee is found brutally murdered in the their home and Fred is charged with the crime.

It would appear that the two stories are completely separate, if it was not for the connection between Renee and Alice. One is constantly trying to find out how it is all connected and how and why Pullman’s character could essentially morph into someone else. Perhaps it is a method to demonstrate bipolar personality disorder, but that does not explain how Fred got released from prison.
In 1997, David Lynch’s film Lost Highway is released. One of the posters promoting the film displays a picture of the lead actor Bill Pullman [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where two other faces appear behind him, in a rather faded shade. Below is a car, where a blonde lady (Patricia Arquette), sits and looks directly at the person looking at her. Nothing makes complete sense nor does it reveal anything besides the characters and the car, which is a clear link to the title. This eerie and horrifying, but rather simple image is what one is left with prior to the movie. After watching it, the poster seems to capture the confusion quite well.
What Lynch’s goal with this film is [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is unknown. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when presented with all of the material in the film, one will keep trying to find the red thread between the two stories. But this thread will be impossible to find if one relies on natural and realistic explanations. The only way this film can make sense in the end is if one thinks supernaturally and abstract, stepping outside the realistic explanations and expectations. If one simply searches for the red thread by thinking what could realistically have happened in the movie, the thread will not be found. Without such an imagination and state of mind, this film will not make sense – even to those who frustratingly try bending their thoughts.
During his time in prison, Fred is very silent and in awe. He does not remember killing her – just finding her. All of a sudden, Fred turns into Pete Dayton, played by Balthazar Getty. In this life, he is no longer in prison as he works at an auto shop. Here, he meets ‘Renee’ who is now Alice Wakefield, but still played by Arquette. The only physical difference between Renee and Alice is the hair colour.
