American Masters on PBS celebrates the achievements of architect I.M. Pei. Pei was born in China in 1917. He came to the United States to study architecture with the intent on returning to China. However when cultural and political events unfolded in his native country [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Pei remained in the U.S. He received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from MIT then a Masters in Architecture from Harvard. Pei has received several honors and awards during his career. In 1954 he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
Having been born in China, Pei was proud to take on this challenge of designing a new museum for his native home of Suzhou. His task was to modernize the Chinese architecture while still keeping the flavor of the community. The site of the new museum is in the city’s oldest neighborhood. Structures from the Ming and Qing dynasties make up the classical architecture of the city. While paying homage to the former classical architects, Pei decided to use some of the local flavor while at the same time setting a precedent for future Chinese architects, and modernize the look of China.

Every little detail was examined. The rock garden, which was so important to him, was worked and re-worked in order to meet his expectations and standards.
Besides bringing natural light into his structures, I.M. Pei is known for bringing nature into his buildings as well. All his designs through the years have helped to modernize architecture around the world in a classy and natural way. He has taken great pride in his buildings and the fact that he pays homage to the locations in which they Pei: Building China Modern[/i] is an interesting look at the life and career of this ingenious architect. Viewers are treated to understanding his past and his visions.
I.M. Pei: Building China Modern is a documentary focusing on the several years of the Suzhou Museum in Suzhou, China [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from inception to completion. The film begins with the Grand Louvre in Paris. Pei’s pyramid design was an addition to the historic museum which many Parisians did not like. It is a modern touch to the otherwise old classic style which surrounds it. However Pei knew he had to modernize the architecture of the city and bring it forward. His trademark is bringing natural light into his structures, and nothing exemplifies this better than the glass pyramid structure in Paris.

Because of his advancing age, Pei was limited to how much time he could actually spend in China. He began the project in his mid-eighties. Due to this his trips to the building site were minimal, however he kept close tabs on everything and his associates on the scene kept him updated. I.M. Pei wanted to make sure all aspects on this project was completed the way he envisioned them. This was not only a project that was close to his heart because he was born here, but it would be one of his last projects.

Two of Pei’s sons also appear in the film. They are continuing in their father’s footsteps.
