Vanilla oil is a popular ingredient in many oriental perfumes because it is believed to possess aphrodisiac actions. It it has long been thought to decrease fever even though there is no medical proof that it is effective. The variety which is primarily grown to extract vanilla is Vanilla planifolia, a native of Mexico that is currently grown throughout the tropics. Vanilla is an orchid and a climbing plant.
Myths and History of the Vanilla Plant

Extraction of the Vanilla

Vanilla essential oil is extracted from the vanilla fruit when it is green. The fruit is dried then fermented, to obtain the recognizable brown vanilla pod. The vanilla oil is then obtained by a method called enfleurage which uses fats or oils are used to absorb the oil which is followed by extraction into alcohol. The alcohol is then distilled to obtain the essential oil. The main components of vanilla essential oils are Vanillin Hydroxybenzaldehyde [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Isobutyric Acid, Eugenol, Caproic Acid and acetic acid.
Uses
Vanilla essential oil is used in massage oils, balms and lotions. It isn't generally used in soap making owing to the delicate character of the vanilla aroma. It is frequently used in addition to other essential oils to compliment and enhance their scents. It is also reputed to have anti-oxidant properties and has been used a sedative and anti-depressant. As with all essential oils you should not ingest pure vanilla oil. Most of the products flavored with 'vanilla' do not contain this essential oil but a synthetic substitute.
