When The Vampire Diaries burst onto the scene on CW TV last fall, there can be little question as to what prompted this adaptation of L.J. Smith’s book series: it was a response to the Twilight craze. Indeed, anyone reading the Twilight books who has previously read The Vampire Diaries series, or vice-versa, will easily draw parallels. With its first season now wrapped, let’s look at how The Vampire Diaries stands up as a show.
The Vampire Diaries is the story of high school girl Elena who becomes caught in a love triangle between two vampire brothers. While she finds a soul mate in the dark and mysterious nice guy Stefan, she cannot deny her attraction to his brother, the dark and mysterious not-so-nice guy Damon. As she struggles with her feelings, the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia is threatened by other vampires and other mysterious forces.
Then there’s Elena’s best friend Bonnie, a descendant of the Salem witches who in the books is gifted with a certain level of clairvoyant ability. The show takes this much farther, turning the character into a full-blown witch who spends the early part of the season discovering her abilities and using magic and spells more and more frequently as the show goes on. Elena’s other friend from the books, Meredith, is nowhere to be seen on the show, but at least we still have Matt [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Elena’s ex-boyfriend who still carries a torch for her, and the snooty popular girl Caroline.
The show also introduces plenty of new characters, too. Principal among these is Elena’s little brother Jeremy, an anti-social junkie loser who can’t seem to stay out of trouble. The show clearly defines itself as having its own identity away from the books by centering many of the story arcs around him, such as his romances with Matt’s sister Vicki or vampire girl Anna (both new characters too).
Book to Screen
Let’s compare it for a moment to the early seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While Buffy was in high school, she went drinking once and was nearly eaten by a snake creature, and the one time she slept with Angel all hell broke loose, completely affecting the course of the second season. The Vampire Diaries, on the other hand, has teens going to parties, drinking themselves into a stupor and jumping into bed with eac

What These Kids Are Doing
One thing about the show that some viewers may be bothered by is the way it trivializes teen sex and drinking. Even drugs enter the picture, particularly through Jeremy, and although this is frowned upon, there are never any heavy consequences. None of these subjects are ever mentioned in the books, which kept a high moral standard that the show seems to be without.
As far as the cast is concerned, Nina Dobrev does her job playing Elena. Paul Wesley was an ideal choice for the role of Stefan [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perfectly capturing his brooding demeanor and insecurity about what he is. But it’s Ian Somerhalder as Damon, the suave bad boy with a dry sense of humor [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who really steals the show. He’s intimidating and funny at the same time, and he clearly has a blast on screen.
Now how does a studio turn a book series, and a rather short one at that, into a regular primetime TV drama? Obviously that’s not as simple a task as turning a book into a film. As such, the show is more about paying homage to the books rather than following them to the letter. The premise is the same, the setting is the same, and most of the characters are the same, but the plot follows a totally different arc.
