Parabolic skis are also commonly known as shaped skis or carving skis and are best suited for piste skiers (skiers who prefer groomed runs). They usually have a traditional camber (curvature of the ski as seen from the side) and are shaped narrower in the waist (mid-ski, beneath the binding) than at the tip or tail of the ski. This makes them easy to get onto the edge and initiate the turn. The difference between the width of tip, tail and waist is known as the sidecut. The sidecut is closely related to turn radius.
