US Movie Theaters' Response to Changes, Then and Now
But movie studios like Disney want to increase DVD sales and combat piracy. Since 9 out of 10 movies lose money these days, DVD sales have made up for the shortfall. But the economic downturn of 2008 has collapsed the DVD market and studios are feeling the pinch. They hope to recoup some of those losses with earlier DVD releases. Executives also tell Variety that they'd save on marketing costs by overlapping the two ('Alice' truce is just the beginning, 26 February 2010).
UK Cinemas' Disney Boycott
While audiences are anticipating the release of Disney's Alice in Wonderland, industry insiders have been attentive for a different reason. Disney announced that it would shorten the time between the theatrical release and the DVD release. In response, UK cinemas threatened to boycott the movie. The conflict had less to do with Alice in Wonderland than with the business of movie releases. And Disney seems to have triumphed.
This is not a new fight. In 1983, Universal released Pirates of Penzance in theaters and on pay-per-view on the same day. Theater chains were so incensed that only 92 theaters showed the film. In 2009, when Sony an
Theatrical Release vs. DVD Release
Typically, movies make most of their money during the first two months of theatrical release. After leaving movie theaters, there is a time-lag before the DVD release, during which time pirates begin selling illegal copies. Disney wants to shorten that time-lag and release DVDs sooner, so that less money is lost to piracy. That [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in effect, shortens the amount of time movies spend in theaters. Naturally, movie theaters are resistant. They want to show films in theaters for longer, especially the big hits. They worry that if people know movies will soon be out on DVD, they'll no longer see them in theaters.
Disney publicly announced that for two films a year, it would move up the DVD release. For years the DVD release has come four months after the theatrical release. Disney wants to shorten that to three months, effectively shortening the movie's time in theaters. Disney stated it would begin this experiment with Alice in Wonderland, one of its tentpole 3D films. According to Deadline Hollywood [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it imposed a 12-week theatrical window, rather than the standard 17 weeks (UK Exhibitors End Boycott Of Disney's 'Alice,' 25 February 2010).
Studios and theaters split box office proceeds. But that division isn't even; generally, they negotiate a tiered structure to the box office split. When a movie is first released the studio gets the majority of the box office. As the weeks progress the studio's percentage of ticket sales decreases and more money stays with the theaters. That's partly why theaters like longer theatrical releases; they make more money per ticket in later weeks.
After the announcement [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the UK's Odeon, Vue, and Cineworld cinemas all threatened to boycott Alice in Wonderland. Odeon and Vue even took down film posters, stopped playing its trailer, and wouldn't book tickets. Negotiations quickly followed. Cineworld gave in first, followed by Vue, and finally Odeon on 25 February, mere hours before the film's royal premiere, attended by Prince Charles. After ongoing negotiations, Disney agreed to a range of conditions, including a limited number of movies per year that would get an early DVD release and a ban on DVD advertisements until six to eight weeks after the theatrical release. Alice in Wonderland will be released on 5 March.
